Chelsea are rumoured to be in talks to sign Andriy Yarmolenko.
Earlier this week Chelsea became the latest club to be linked with Ukrainian winger Andriy Yarmolenko.
The Star reported club owner Roman Abramovich had entered talks with Dinamo Kiev over signing the 24-year-old, also linked with Liverpool in recent months.
Chelsea however already have a vast number of attacking players, so it is important to ask what exactly Yarmolenko can bring to the club?
It is clear firstly that the attacker would look to be a real impact player in terms of production. He scored 21 goals in all competitions for Dinamo Kiev last season, including five in nine Europa League games.
In addition to this, Yarmolenko provided eight assists, therefore responsible for 29 goals for his club last season. His 12 goals in Ukraine’s Premier League, is more than any of Chelsea’s strikers contributed last season in the English Premier League.
| Team | Goals | |
|---|---|---|
| Samuel Eto’o | Chelsea | 9 |
| Demba Ba | Chelsea | 5 |
| Fernando Torres | Chelsea | 5 |
Arguably the best competition on which to judge Yarmolenko’s output is in last season’s Europa League. Data from whoscored.com reveals the Ukrainian was highly creative for Kiev.
He provided an average of 2.9 key passes per game. Against Chelsea’s first team squad in the Premier League, this exceeds each of them:
| Team | Total Key Passes / apps | |
|---|---|---|
| Eden Hazard | Chelsea | 2.63 |
| Willian | Chelsea | 2.60 |
| Oscar | Chelsea | 1.45 |
| Nemanja Matic | Chelsea | 1.35 |
| Ramires | Chelsea | 1.10 |
| Fernando Torres | Chelsea | 1.04 |
| André Schürrle | Chelsea | 0.97 |
| Mohamed Salah | Chelsea | 0.90 |
Another strong area of performance for Yarmolenko is his dribbling. He averaged 4.3 successful dribbles per game in Europa League football last season.
Once again against Chelsea’s stars in Premier League competition, this production is by superior to Eden Hazard, and far better than any body else in the squad.
| Team | Won Dribbles / apps | |
|---|---|---|
| Eden Hazard | Chelsea | 3.77 |
| Mohamed Salah | Chelsea | 1.60 |
| Willian | Chelsea | 1.52 |
| Nemanja Matic | Chelsea | 1.41 |
| Fernando Torres | Chelsea | 1.18 |
| Ramires | Chelsea | 1.10 |
| Oscar | Chelsea | 0.76 |
| André Schürrle | Chelsea | 0.63 |
While the comparison is indirect, it provides a snapshot of the best assets Yarmolenko could bring to Chelsea, and why he is so highly rated.
The 24-year-old is a classic winger, best utilised on the right, who is a different player to the type Chelsea have at their disposal.
