Eddie Howe to Newcastle United is looking like a done deal.

The Telegraph reported on Thursday that the 43-year-old had agreed a deal with Newcastle until 2024.

And interestingly, Howe could be reunited with one of his former players, should he wind up replacing Steve Bruce on Tyneside.

Earlier this morning it was reported by Guillem Balague that the Magpies were interested in signing Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid.

Howe has previously managed the England right-back at Burnley.

And here’s what the would-be Newcastle boss said about the Saudi Public Investment Fund target in 2018.

He said: “His dedication to improve his crossing and work on his free-kicks – he used to do that a lot at Burnley. He is one of the best crossers of the ball I have ever worked with – without a doubt.

“It was natural to him and he set up so many goals for us.”

Admirer

Howe is clearly a big fan of the former Spurs defender, who joined Atletico for £20 million.

And a reunion at St James’s Park actually does seem very probable, should Howe get the job.

With United 19th in the Premier League table and six points adrift of safety, lord knows there’s a lot more quality needed in the North East.

But a tried-and-tested, proven star in English football wouldn’t be a bad start at all.

Newcastle will be linked with a lot more players between now and January – and many will be completely unrealistic.

But this story certainly has legs for a number of reasons and it’ll be fascinating to see what comes of it – if anything.
