With the Burnley defender expected to sign in the near future, DeAndre Yedlin may find himself even further from the Tottenham first team.
It is rare for a player that has played so little for a club to accumulate such favour among supporters. But that is what has happened with Tottenham fullback DeAndre Yedlin.
The US international was one of the breakout stars of the World Cup last summer, and Spurs fans were delighted when the North Londoners secured the services of the 21-year-old from Seattle Sounders not long after the tournament in Brazil wrapped up.
They have waited patiently to see the rapid fullback in action. Despite him joining six months early in January this year, they only had a handful of minutes in one fixture to see Yedlin in official action. However, since the end of the season the defender has starred in the post-season friendlies against Malaysian and Australian opposition, and also played his part in the United States’ astonishing wins in the Netherlands and Germany.
That’s why there is some uncertainty about Yedlin’s future, with Tottenham on the cusp of adding another right back to the squad in Burnley’s Kieran Trippier, according to Sky Sports.
The ex Manchester City player was one of the Clarets’ best players last season, and looks like joining Tottenham to boost a right back area which, with doubts remaining over Kyle Walkers’ fitness and form, relied on Eric Dier for large portions of last season.
If all three fullbacks were fit, Yedlin would likely be the first one cast aside, given his lack of Premier League experience.
This means that, unless Walker is likely to be out for a large portion of the new season, the former Sounders star will continue to avoid the Premier League football he must get to develop.
That is why the most likely thing that will happen before the end of the transfer window is that Yedlin will head out on loan, to some Premier League side where he can make mistakes and learn from them and it not affect Tottenham’s Champions League aspirations.
But considering his performances in recent matches, there is some doubt as to whether Yedlin needs such a loan, and can instead be involved in Tottenham’s first team from the beginning of the season.
If Trippier arrives, Spurs fans may never get to find out if that was the case.
