Spurs reportedly made an attempt to land Samir Handanovic from Serie A giants Inter Milan this summer.
Anyone who has watched Serie A regularly over the last few seasons will tell you that Samir Handanovic is without doubt one of the world’s best goalkeepers.
However, the penalty-saving specialist’s reputation has not exactly been aided by an underachieving Inter Milan side who have not featured in the Champions League since 2011/12. Yet, if Handanovic did leave Inter after five years at the San Siro, it would not be to sit on the bench elsewhere – especially with the Slovenian international at the peak of his powers at the age of 33.
Therefore, reports from FC Inter News that Tottenham Hotspur tried to sign him in the summer raise a few questions – namely, what this means for the future of Hugo Lloris.
The long-serving Frenchman only signed a new contract at Tottenham until 2022 as recently as December but there is suddenly a growing fear in North London that Spurs’ desire to keep an immensely talented squad together may come under threat in the near future.
What does the future hold?
Disagreements over chairman Daniel Levy’s infamous wage structure prompted a public outburst by Danny Rose as well as intensified speculation that Toby Alderweireld could seek a big-money move elsewhere, potentially even to a Premier League rival per The Standard.
And, back in March, Lloris refused to rule out a departure from North London despite admitting that he is still enthused by the idea of playing under Mauricio Pochettino.
“I feel good at Tottenham, but in football everything’s fragile and can change. Some things you can’t refuse,” the France captain said in quotes reported by The Independent.
And though it’s commonplace now for Europe’s best clubs to have two top-class goalkeepers at their disposal, and Handanovic would certainly be an upgrade on Michel Vorm, it is hard to imagine the Slovenian sitting on the bench.
