Roma's Federico Fazio celebrates scoring their second goal

When Tottenham Hotspur sent defender Federico Fazio on loan to AS Roma in the summer, few fans at White Hart Lane were anything other than relieved.

After all, the Argentine arrived in North London with a big reputation but he failed to live up to it and quickly fell down the pecking order under manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The 29-year-old signed for the Italian club on a season-long loan with the Daily Mail reporting that a £3.4million fee has been agreed to make the move permanent next summer. But the more Fazio plays this season, the more it seems that – for once – Spurs chairman Daniel Levy may be getting the short end of the deal.

Levy is usually a superb negotiator who has got far more than expected for players deemed surplus to requirements in North London. However, in today’s market, £3.4million for a centre-back who has rediscovered his best form in Serie A seems very low.

At the time it was probably about all Tottenham could get for a player approaching his thirties who had struggled for any kind of consistency ever since leaving Sevilla.

But now he is playing a vital role in Roma’s surge to second in the Italian top flight, just four points behind leaders Juventus, and if they can sign him for what now amounts to a cut-price deal, for once it will be the buying club laughing rather than Tottenham.
