When Dominic Solanke opted to join Liverpool in the summer he would have been hoping to make his mark at Anfield sooner rather than later.

With Daniel Sturridge’s injury record prompting many Reds fans to wonder if they would ever see the best of the England international again, the arrival of Solanke seemed a safety measure to ensure Liverpool had another exciting striker to cover if the 28-year-old was struck down for the foreseeable future.

So it is interesting to note that, far from slipping out of the side following Solanke’s arrival, it is Sturridge’s resurgence that has limited the former’s own game time.

While Roberto Firmino remains Liverpool’s first choice central attacker, Sturridge has already racked up eight league appearances – including four starts – and his goal against Huddersfield Town was followed by another strike against Maribor in the Champions League.

In contrast, Solanke is yet to find the net for his new club, with all but one of his nine appearances coming from the bench.

There is no doubt Solanke’s time will come at Liverpool; however Sturridge’s return to fitness and form may have delayed that somewhat, not that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will be complaining. After all, at his best Sturridge is still a wonderful asset to have at his disposal.
