Arsenal should consider a move for Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling.
What does Leroy Sane’s move to Man City mean for Raheem Sterling?
With Manchester City completing the signing of German youngster Leroy Sane in a £37 million deal from Schalke (BBC Sport), what does the future hold for Raheem Sterling?
After he suffered a poor Euro 2016 campaign with England, Sterling found himself the target for heavy criticism and was made somewhat of a scapegoat for his nation’s failure in France.
The 21-year-old failed to establish himself at the Etihad following his £49 million move from Liverpool last summer, and he could find his first-team opportunities limited even further now with the arrival of the 20-year-old German.
Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling in action
With Arsenal’s summer taking its’ usual course, and fans of the Gunners growing increasingly restless with he lack of big-name arrivals, should Arsene Wenger consider a move for Sterling?
The former Queens Park Rangers youngster is blessed with electric pace, and can play anywhere along the front line. Although his form has suffered over the last 12 months, he would still arguably be a better alternative to the ineffective Theo Walcott or even the inconsistent Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Arsenal have become too heavily reliant on Alexis Sanchez since his arrival at the Emirates two seasons ago, and having Sterling amongst the ranks would enable Wenger to use the Chilean more sparingly rather than running him into the ground before he inevitably tweaks his hamstring.
Sterling would be a good singing for Arsenal
Sterling’s contract at City does not expire until the summer of 2020, so the fee required to prise him from the club would be fairly substantial.
Despite Wenger and Arsenal CEO Ivan Gazidis’ claims that they cannot compete financially with Europe’s biggest clubs, they are still the most cash-rich club in the Premier League, and would easily be able to afford a move for Sterling, should they wish to explore the option of signing the youngster.
Should a move come to fruition, it would give Sterling the opportunity to reignite his career, and prove to people what he is truly capable of. It would also give the Arsenal fans something to get excited about, and help lift the perennial transfer window gloom currently enveloping the Emirates.
