Cristiano Ronaldo had an interesting comment to make after last night’s Champions League defeat, which could spell bad news for Manchester United.
The reasons behind Cristiano Ronaldo refusing to so far sign a new contract at Real Madrid have previously been explored in great detail, without any conclusive resolution.
One real likelihood is that he is waiting to find out the future of Jose Mourinho before committing to a new deal.
But rather than signing on with Mourinho, it may just be that the former Manchester United icon wants to ensure the manager is gone before renewing his deal at the Bernabeu.
Despite Mourinho presiding over the most prolific spell of his career, the manager is notorious for his difficult nature, and the true workings of the pair’s relationship have never been detailed convincingly.
Ronaldo is such a consummate professional, that you feel even if he disliked Mourinho intensely, he would continue to do the business on the field.
That is the impression he gave last night at least, in his post-match interview when quizzed over the future of his current boss.
“I don’t care about him. I only care about Real Madrid.”
Wow. Could you imagine any Manchester United player stating publicly they ‘do not care’ about Sir Alex Ferguson?
They would be long gone regardless of who they are.
Mourinho’s future at Madrid is still not sorted out. While reports appear as though the manager has a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ behind the scenes to join Chelsea, the nitty gritty details of his contract with Madrid still has to be sorted out, nor has there been any announcement from the club.
There has been plenty of talk that Manchester United are going to finance a mega-bid for Ronaldo this summer, with his contract expiring in 2015.
However the Red Devils may just experience a double-whammy when Mourinho signs with Chelsea, in that right afterwards and dependent on the identity of their new manager, Ronaldo may just renew his deal with Real Madrid.
