Joe Garner looks set to return to the Championship with Ipswich Town interested – and there appears to be no room for him at Rangers.
Rangers target Eduardo Herrera
Pedro Caixinha’s Rangers revolution is taking shape. According to the Daily Record, Mexican international striker Eduardo Herrera is in Glasgow putting the finishing touches to his £1.5 million move from Pumas UNAL.
Caixinha knows the strapping targetman well from a loan spell at Santos Laguna in 2013/14, describing him as a ‘complete striker’.
Though Rangers fans could be forgiven for taking those claims with a pinch of salt when glancing at Herrera’s recent statistics. He netted just six goals in 28 games in all competitions last season and contributed just five in 21 under Caixinha four years ago.
Nonetheless, the Portuguese manager will pin his hopes on the 28-year-old as Rangers search for a goalscorer to take the pressure off veteran hitman Kenny Miller – the only player to reach double figures for the Ibrox giants last season.
And supporters will be hoping that Herrera proves better value for money than Joe Garner. The former Preston North End striker was the most expensive signing of Mark Warburton’s reign at £1.8 million, as reported by the Daily Record, but failed to fit in at Ibrox.

His up-and-at-em, physical approach was at odds with the possession-based style espoused by both Caixinha and his predecessor, meaning he netted just seven goals in 34 games.
As such, the Daily Record claimed that Rangers could let Garner leave on a cut price deal just twelve months later. The Express report that Ipswich Town will pay £500,000 to take him back to the Championship.
And Herrera’s arrival suggests his place in the squad is vulnerable. Time will tell whether that decision will prove to be a good one.
