Lee Hodson has started just three Scottish Premiership games this season and could face fresh competition from Rangers’ Ross McCrorie.
With Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha giving few second thoughts to getting rid of a number of senior players in the summer, Lee Hodson did well to survive the cull.
After all, the Northern Ireland international was hardly a regular starter when Caixinha replaced Mark Warburton at Ibrox for the final few months of the 2016/17 with the more attack-minded and technically gifted James Tavernier chosen instead at right-back.
Nonetheless, Hodson remained in Glasgow despite reported interest from Charlton Athletic, as reported by the Scottish Sun. Though with Tavernier still first-choice, the former MK Dons defender once again appears to be fighting a losing battle convincing Caixinha that he deserves to start more often.
And with the Gers boss insisting that he sees right-footed youngster Ross McCrorie as an option at full-back, Hodson’s hopes of more regular game time may have taken another hit.
“[It’s good that] we can call the [young] players to be with us,” Caixinha said on Rangers TV. “We have Ross, who can also play out of position as a full-back if you needed.”
McCrorie has made three senior appearances for Rangers, all coming this season. The 19-year-old earned rave reviews for an assured performance at centre-half against Celtic in the Old Firm clash last month and Caixinha even tipped McCrorie to become one of the finest defenders in the club’s history, per the Daily Record.
Considering how highly Caixinha rates Rangers’ latest fresh-faced defensive talent, Hodson should perhaps be looking over his shoulder.
