Well, they call football the beautiful game and there was an example of that in Parken tonight following the disturbing incident involving Christian Eriksen.

The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder collapsed on the field during Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener against Finland in Copenhagen tonight.

Distressing images showed medics performing chest compressions on the 29-year-old, while the Danish players stood over their teammate as a shield.

Denmark’s football association later confirmed a positive Eriksen update by revealing that the player was conscious and speaking while awaiting further tests at a nearby hospital.

In the uncertainty of it all, both sets of fans came together in tribute for the player.

Finland supporters were filmed shouting the name ‘Christian’ and the Danish fans completed it by chanting ‘Eriksen’.

Here’s a video of the scenes:

Update

Early reports indicate that Eriksen, who left Tottenham to join Inter Milan 18 months ago, is out of the woods.

The game was initially called off but it is now being resumed in what can only be described as an extremely positive sign.

You have to imagine that the Denmark players would not feel comfortable unless they had the peace of mind in knowing their teammate was going to be okay and in good hands.

From the incident itself to the television coverage of it, so much of what happened this evening was unsettling.

But the way in which both groups of supporters rallied together was a big reminder that football is still a beautiful game, even during the darkest moments.
