Tottenham were linked with a swoop for Demarai Gray back in July, by the Times.

This week, the Telegraph reported that Leicester could listen to offers for the 24-year-old winger, who has just a year left on his contract.

We’ve looked at three things Gray could bring to north London if a deal can be struck…

More counter attacking threat

Rapid wingers who can counter attack at speed are a staple of any Jose Mourinho side.

He already has Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn at his disposal and Gray would add to the abundance of riches.

It would increase the chances of Mourinho being able to play his preferred rope-a-dope style even if injuries bite like they did last season.

Fatigue will be a big factor at Tottenham this term and Gray would likely get plenty of chances to play if he did join.

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer signings

  1. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

    £15 million; Southampton

  2. Joe Hart

  3. Matt Doherty

    £13 million; Wolves

  4. Sergio Reguilon

    £25 million; Real Madrid

  5. Gareth Bale

    Loan; Real Madrid

  6. Carlos Vinicius

    Loan; Benfica

  7. Joe Rodon

    £12 million; Swansea

Boost the homegrown quota

Given they are a club perceived as adept at bringing through their own players, Spurs are right on the edge of their homegrown quota.

There can be little doubt that was behind the arrival of Joe Hart to replace Michel Vorm, and Gray’s arrival would certainly help too.

It’s not often an English talent of the right age is on the market at a reasonable price – which Gray should be given his contract situation.

That English premium is, in part, created by the homegrown quota.

Title-winning experience

Okay, Gray wasn’t a major player at Leicester when they won the title in 2016, but he has still been in a title-winning dressing room.

For a club which hasn’t won a trophy since 2008, that cannot be underestimated.

He’s seen what it takes to get over the line as part of a grizzled, hungry group Jose Mourinho would no doubt approve of.

That’s worth adding to the Spurs ranks, at the right price.
