David Moyes worked with Sunderland strike-target James Vaughan at Everton.
David Moyes’ past quotes on James Vaughan may just suggest that he would approve of Sunderland’s bid for the Bury forward.
And Sunderland’s former manager Moyes is the man who gave Vaughan his chance.
Vaughan was handed an opportunity as a youngster by Moyes at Everton, and the Scottish boss’s opinion of the striker was very high.
Moyes said to Eye Football, back in 2007: “He is as game as anybody I’ve known and from that point of view he’s a big asset to Everton.
“He won’t shirk anything. He’ll do as much work as he can. He’ll battle with everyone. He is a different type of centre forward to the others we’ve got.
“He wants it badly and in this day and age it’s something we love to see. He is so desperate to play and he’s a bit of a throwback in that respect.
“He’s a very conscientious boy and because of that he’ll continue to improve.
“There’s technical stuff he needs to work on, because he’s missed a good part of his early development through injury, but work-rate and enthusiasm is never a problem.”
Vaughan has arguably not had the career that many thought he would, when he burst on to the scene at Everton – but he has still proven to be a fairly solid goalscorer in the lower leagues.
Vaughan enjoyed the best scoring season in his career last term, when he blasted in 24 goals in League One for Bury.
And there is hope that Vaughan could be similarly prolific for Sunderland next time around.
Sunderland need to replace the goals of Jermain Defoe, and Vaughan will be under pressure to hit the ground running if he does move to the Stadium of Light.
