Last year, Learner Tien pulled off an upset over Daniil Medvedev in a five-set battle.
Daniil Medvedev is set for another demanding test at the Australian Open as he prepares to face Learner Tien in a fourth-round rematch that follows one of last year’s most exhausting encounters. Twelve months ago, the Russian was edged out in a five-set battle despite mounting a comeback from two sets down.
That defeat remains fresh as the pair prepare to meet again in Melbourne. Speaking ahead of the clash, Medvedev shared candid thoughts on why matches against Tien are among the toughest he faces on tour.
Medvedev admits Learner Tien is an opponent he dislikes facing

During his press conference, Daniil Medvedev explained that he was aware Learner Tien was likely waiting for him in the fourth round while he was battling through a five-set win of his own. Medvedev acknowledged that once he saw the scores, he knew a physically demanding matchup was looming.
He went on to admit that Tien is not an opponent he enjoys playing, suggesting the feeling is mutual. Medvedev pointed to the nature of their previous meetings, which have consistently featured long, punishing rallies and matches that swung on fine margins, often with one of them serving for victory.
Despite that, the former US Open champion said he plans to embrace the challenge, expecting a contest filled with defence, shot-making and extended baseline exchanges, while looking for opportunities to surprise his opponent.
Medvedev praises Tien’s rapid rise and baseline strength
Medvedev also offered high praise for Tien’s game, highlighting his baseline ability as the foundation of his rapid ascent into the world’s top 30. While noting that the American’s serve is not overpowering, he stressed that Tien’s consistency and quality from the back of the court make him extremely difficult to break down.
The Russian added that their growing familiarity could shape the rematch, with both players now well aware of each other’s patterns and strengths. After losing two grueling matches to Tien last season before securing a recent victory, Medvedev said he is looking forward to testing himself again against an opponent he believes has a very bright future in the sport.
Tien echoed those sentiments in his own press conference, describing their meetings as “wars” defined by long rallies and few free points. The pair will renew their rivalry in the fourth round of the Australian Open on Sunday, January 25, with another physically and mentally demanding battle widely expected.
