He’s the owner of Spotify and Daniel Ek is hitting all the right notes with Arsenal fans at this moment in time.
The Swedish and Arsenal-mad billionaire revealed on Twitter on Friday night that he was interested in buying his beloved Gunners.
Fans of the Emirates Stadium swarmed outside the ground yesterday to protest Stan Kroenke’s ownership of the club, following their attempt to break away from UEFA in favour of a now-suspended European Super League.
Being a billionaire and CEO of a company worth £56 billion [The Sun], Ek is more than likely quite an intelligent man and there was clearly an opportunity to nail his colours to the mast, amid the protest of Kroenke.
But the 38-year-old is legitimately an Arsenal fan and here’s a tweet that some Gunners supporters dug up from 2015:
Ek was only 21 when Arsenal – then under legendary manager Arsene Wenger – went through the 2003-04 campaign without losing a Premier League game, and if the entrepreneur and technologist remembers where he was back then that is further evidence of his clout as a bonafide supporter.
How much is Daniel Ek worth?
According to Forbes, he has a personal fortune of £4.10 billion – £1 billion and some change less than 73-year-old Kroenke.
Relatively speaking, there isn’t much in the difference between both net worths and it does seem plausible that Ek could make an offer that would get the American businessman’s attention.
But Arsenal fans have been down this road before with Aliko Dangote and Alisher Usmanov, both of whom publicly declared an interest in buying out Kroenke.
And time will tell whether this is just a case of same song, different artist.
