According to the Irish Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Walsall teenager Mitchell Candlin, but what could Spurs’ interest mean for some of the club’s current young goal-scorers?

After all, it could be argued that despite the presence of Kazaiah Sterling, Shayon Harrison and Rio Griffiths, striker is the one area of the field where Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has been reluctant to promote from within in the last few years.

Indeed, Harrison has slipped off the radar in alarming fashion in the last few months, while Sterling has had to watch as Anthony Georgiou, Kyle Walker-Peters and Tashan Oakley-Boothe have been given opportunities to impress.

With Harry Kane in such fine form, Tottenham are not exactly in need of another young forward, especially with the summer addition of Fernando Llorente to add quality backup to the England international. However it is telling that, while Spurs are quick to give so many of their academy products the chance to shine, the forwards have been conspicuous by their absence.

In time Sterling is expected to break through, while it will be interesting to see how Harrison’s career goes from here. But if Tottenham do bring in Candlin, the 17-year-old’s presence could directly impact some of the other young forwards hoping for a chance in North London.

Pochettino will want to strengthen as much as possible in the years ahead, but Candlin will not swap Walsall for Tottenham unless he believes a first-team opportunity will be his in due course.
