Sunday’s Premier League stalemate between Leicester City and Arsenal, last season’s top two Premier League sides, may have flattered to deceive somewhat after ending 0-0, but there was one interesting moment that spectators may have missed.
Leicester star Jamie Vardy switched shirts at full time, donning the shirt of England teammate Jack Wilshere, in a scene that may have the feel of what might have been for Gunners supporters, with the striker almost leaving the Foxes for the Emirates earlier in the summer.
It was a move that looked like it was going to be a major part of Arsenal’s development into a genuine Premier League favourite, as the Gunners made a big money bid for Leicester’s goal machine in the off season.
The 29-year-old netted an incredible 24 times in 36 Premier League matches to shoot the Foxes to the most unpredictable of titles – a tally a Gunners goalscorer has achieved just twice since Thierry Henry managed it in 2006.
But instead of the striker completing a move to Arsenal, he continued his duty with England at the European Championships, and then opted to sign a new contract at the King Power Stadium keeping him at Leicester until 2020.
And given how the Londoners’ transfer business has gone so far this summer, Vardy swapping shirts with an Arsenal player is likely to be the closest Arsene Wenger gets to bringing in a new striker before deadline day.
