Daniel Cormier has heard plenty of trash talk during his MMA career, but one Conor McGregor exchange crossed a personal line.

The former UFC champion explained why a remark aimed at Dustin Poirier ended up dragging him into the feud and triggered a reaction he rarely admits publicly.

Cormier revisited the moment while discussing McGregor’s history of verbal attacks, explaining his frustration after the clip resurfaced online and reminded fans how personal the exchange became.

He said, “Some of the trash talk hurts. You know what was bad? Conor McGregor was fighting Dustin Poirier, and Dustin Poirier and I are both from Lafayette, Louisiana,” Cormier said.

He added: “Conor called Dustin a hillbilly. I said, ‘But if Dustin is a hillbilly, then I’m from the same place as him. What does that make me?’ He said, ‘You’re a ghetto hillbilly.’ I wanted to slap him.”

Cormier’s reaction was rooted in pride rather than rivalry. Poirier is not just a fellow fighter, he is someone Cormier feels represents their shared hometown with integrity.

That context explains why McGregor’s words landed differently than standard pre-fight noise. For Cormier, the insult was no longer promotional theatre and became something personal.

Conor McGregor ‘hillbilly’ comments toward Dustin Poirier

The exchange Cormier referenced traces back to 2021, when McGregor launched a vicious online tirade aimed at Poirier during their feud.

In one now-deleted message, McGregor wrote, “You’re ripped you inbred hillbilly. Why do you wink with your ears? You f______ braindead hillbilly. 500k with no plan in place. Ye hang tight. Fool.

“You must be new to money. The fight is off btw by the way. I’m going to fight someone else on the 10th, Good luck on your old contract kid,” he added.

The comments were part of a wider meltdown that unfolded publicly after McGregor threatened to walk away from their scheduled bout, a situation detailed at the time when the dispute escalated in 2021.

McGregor later deleted the tweet, but the damage was already done. The language reinforced criticism of his tendency to push trash talk beyond competitive promotion.

For Cormier, the issue was never about rivalry with McGregor. It was about respect for where he and Poirier come from, and a belief that some lines should not be crossed.
