Manchester United could end up signing a forward who suits Ruben Amorim’s system for less than the price of Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres – but there are still hurdles to clear.

United have been linked to Gyokeres since Amorim’s arrival in the 2024-25 season, with the 27-year-old viewed as a strong fit for what the Portuguese manager is trying to build at Old Trafford.

But the Swedish striker’s £85m release clause – and Sporting’s reluctance to negotiate – has seen Arsenal emerge as favourites for his signature, leaving United to consider other options in a summer when their finances are under pressure.

One of those alternatives is Ollie Watkins. According to The Mirror, United have held early talks with Aston Villa to gauge the feasibility of a deal for the England striker.

Watkins is under contract until 2028, and Villa are said to have set a £60m asking price. The reports say that United are reluctant to meet that figure, citing concerns over the 29-year-old’s ‘lack of resale value’ and the club’s broader financial constraints.

While Gyokeres has the more illustrious profile following a sensational spell in Portugal, Watkins is viewed internally as a practical alternative.

His finishing, movement and link-up play could make him a seamless fit in Amorim’s attack and come at a price well below Gyokeres’ release clause.

But there’s another obstacle beyond the transfer fee: Villa – now firmly in the Champions League conversation – can offer Watkins European football.

United can’t offer European football to Watkins – and that could define the race

It’s believed United were even willing to offer Marcus Rashford – who spent the second half of the 2024-25 season on loan at Villa -as part of a swap deal. But Villa turned down the chance to sign him permanently for £40m and have shown no appetite to revisit that option.

Watkins – who hit 17 goals in 54 appearances across all competitions last season – is not expected to force a move, meaning any deal will likely hinge on whether Villa are open to negotiation and if United are prepared to raise their initial stance.

While Watkins may not carry the same headline appeal as Gyokeres, his ability to fit Amorim’s approach and potentially come at a more manageable fee makes him an option United will continue to monitor – provided they can overcome the challenges standing in the way.
