History was made last night as Barcelona crashed out of the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time in 17 years, with former Manchester City star Leroy Sane starring for Bayern Munich.
The Germany international made it 2-0 to the Bundesliga giants in what was to be a 3-0 win for Bayern, with Sane scoring a thunderbolt of a goal just before half-time.
The result meant Bayern progress to the Round of 16 with a perfect group stage record, with the Bavarian side one of the favourites to win the Champions League, along with Sane’s former side City.
However, the big story from the game was another chapter of Barcelona’s pathetic recent history being written, as the La Liga side finished the group in third place. Meaning Xavi Hernandez’s side will compete in the UEFA Europa League.
Indeed, it was a damning reflection of where Barcelona currently are. With the Spanish side looking like a shadow of the club that were once at the top of the world under Pep Guardiola.
And it was oddly poetic that a former student of the City manager was key to Barcelona’s loss, with Sane scoring one of the goals of the night for Bayern in what was a routine win for the German side.
