Kenny Miller and Clint Hill are set to be rewarded for their impressive displays with new deals.

Rangers’ decision to hand new deals to both Clint Hill and Kenny Miller makes perfect sense. The Daily Record reports that both their contracts will expire at the end of the season though Mark Warburton is determined to keep them at Ibrox.

“Kenny and Clint have been outstanding,” the manager said. “Forget their age. They have experience and their level of performance has been first class. You have to admire them.”

The problem is, however, as much as fans would love to pass off their age as experience and much-needed maturity, it is impossible not to feel a degree of concern that Rangers are so desperate to keep two players with a combined 75 years between them on the books.

Yes, Miller (below) remains Rangers most dangerous attacking threat, his wily movement only sharpened by his 15 years at the top level. And, yes, Hill has arguably been the club’s most consistent defender despite arriving amid much ridicule just 19 months away from his 40th birthday.

However, while Celtic are running away with the league title blessed with a squad stocked full of youthful, promising talent with an ever-increasing resale value, the fact that Rangers remain reliant at both ends on two players whose best years were apparently well behind them just highlights the gap at the top of the Scottish game.

Warburton and Rangers are right to keep Miller and Hill on for another year. They should jump at the chance. But, the fact is, their leadership and experience is good enough for second at best. Until Rangers improve their recruitment, Jordan Rossiter cost a very similar fee to Moussa Dembele after all, evergreen veterans appear their best chance of challenging in the top flight.
