It should probably come as no surprise that Bryson DeChambeau is at the centre of the weirdest thing Johnson Wagner has seen on the range at a tournament.
DeChambeau is a golfer like no other. He earned the mad scientist nickname early on in his career, with the American quickly becoming known for using a set of irons that were all the same length.
There have been plenty of notable incidents on the range over the years. DeChambeau is often a contender for hitting the most balls on the practice ground during a major championship week.
It appears that it baffles Johnson Wagner just how much DeChambeau leaves until the last minute as he prepares to take on golf’s biggest stages.
Johnson Wagner left baffled by Bryson DeChambeau
Wagner was asked on Scorecard from CBS Sports about the strangest thing he has seen when it comes to equipment following the Memorial Tournament, with Ryan Gerard – who lost out in a playoff to J.T. Poston – carrying a number of putters each week to practice with.
And he suggested that he is often left baffled by DeChambeau.
“I’m pretty traditional when it comes to my bag. I don’t change out, especially the putter. Once I find a putter that I like, I pretty much used the same putter my entire career,” he said.

“The weirdest thing I’ve ever seen, probably Bryson DeChambeau at Augusta, and at every major over the last couple of years, he comes out on the driving range on a Thursday morning before going to tee off, and hit seven different driver heads, writing on the bottom of the head, the spin rates, and all sorts of weird stuff. I find that incredibly hard.
“I remember when I first got Track Man, I brought it out on the range before a tournament round, and it freaked me out. I started looking at club path number, all this data, and I’m like, I can’t, I can’t do this. So to think about going to tee off in a major, and playing and messing around with that many different heads right before you go, that’s clearly the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen.
“But Ryan Gerard, you know, he’s got that putting lab basically in his dining room. Doesn’t even have a dining room. He’s turned it into a putting lab. I kind of want to do that here at my house, too, but my wife won’t let me.”
The late driver change that almost cost Bryson DeChambeau the US Open
The amount of choice DeChambeau gives himself almost landed him in trouble back in 2024 ahead of the final round of the US Open.
DeChambeau decided to change his driver head with less than 30 minutes to go before he teed off at Pinehurst. He felt that it had become too flat.
The decision almost backfired, with DeChambeau pushing a number of his drives out to the right over the course of the day.
Obviously, he ended up doing enough to just about get across the line and edge out Rory McIlroy.
Nevertheless, it seems that he remains determined to not leave a single stone unturned in his quest to get better, no matter how close he is to teeing off.
