Noel Whelan was gobsmacked by Helder Costa’s miss from 10 yards out for Leeds United last night.
The Portuguese winger could and definitely should have snatched all three points for the Whites in the 1-1 draw at Elland Road.
Deep into stoppage time, Ezgjan Alioski whipped in a wonderful cross for the approaching Costa.
Firm contact from the Leeds winger’s head would have surely seen Marcelo Bielsa’s side take the victory, but Costa got his header horribly wrong and the ball wound up nearer the corner flag.
Even the visiting goalkeeper, Simon Sluga, held the back of his head in relief – and disbelief – that the relegation-threatened Hatters didn’t concede.
Here’s what Whelan told BBC Radio Leeds during the commentary: “What have you done? I can’t believe that. It’s actually harder to miss than it is to hit the target. I’ve got no idea what he was thinking. You’ve got to get your forehead on that surely. What a chance.”
Fortunately for Leeds, they’re still in pole position with regards to promotion.
Bielsa’s troops still have a six-point cushion in the top two but it could and certainly should’ve been back to eight, despite Brentford’s win.
The good news is that there’s only six games to go and, barring a huge collapse, United will be back in the Premier League next season.
