Speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, Callum Wilson has been dissecting Newcastle’s game against West Ham at the weekend.
The striker spoke about the Magpies’ draw with the Hammers, and he said that he found one thing that West Ham did before the game rather strange.
Indeed, Wilson says that the fact that West Ham chose to change ends before kick-off was bizarre, stating that Newcastle actually prefer shooting towards the Gallowgate End – so it proved.
West Ham’s mind games
Wilson discussed the decision to switch ends.
“We were all set ready to take kick off, but then the referee was like ‘change ends’ and I thought ‘what are these guys on?’ Trying to play mind games, but for us it was one of them. Did you not watch Leicester? They changed ends and within minutes it was 2-0. We like shooting into the Gallowgate End which we prefer. I just thought it was bizarre that they tried to turn us around, but keep it coming,” Wilson said.
Didn’t work
West Ham may have thought they were being clever in turning Newcastle around, but their strategy clearly didn’t work.
Indeed, Newcastle started this game incredibly brightly. They had the ball in the net twice in five minutes, and while one of those efforts was disallowed, they were dominant in the opening portions of the game.
West Ham did eventually settle and get a foothold in the game, but this attempt at unsettling Newcastle was unsuccessful.
