Novak Djokovic has been highly selective with his schedule throughout 2025, choosing only a handful of tournaments to compete in.

It’s all part of a clear strategy from the Serbian star, aimed at preserving his body and making sure he’s in peak condition for the Grand Slam events.

While he hasn’t yet claimed that record-breaking 25th title, it’s hard to argue with how well his approach has paid off this season.

But for someone focused solely on titles, three semi-final appearances won’t feel like enough. The US Open presents another opportunity, especially considering its unpredictable nature and his past success there as a four-time champion.

Andy Roddick has been watching him practice ahead of the tournament and isn’t ruling out Djokovic’s chances.

Andy Roddick caught off guard after watching Novak Djokovic practice for the US Open

Speaking on his Served with Andy Roddick podcast, the former world number one took a closer look at the newly released US Open draw, weighing up everyone’s chances with that in mind.

Inevitably, talk turned to Novak Djokovic, who remains a major talking point as he continues his pursuit of another major milestone.

Roddick had an interesting perspective this time, having seen Djokovic training alongside Alexander Zverev before the tournament got underway.

He said: “I was watching him right before we came over to this stage, and even in practice, there is never a shot that looks panicked. It’s always under control.”

“He has not played since Wimbledon and was practising with Zverev. I saw him break him twice in practice. It’s just unbelievable what he is still doing,” Roddick added.

“If any journalist asks him when he is going to retire, he should just say when I’m not one of the best players in the world anymore and save himself that question over and over again.”

“Novak Djokovic, I mean, he is kind of playing tennis this year, and he has made three semi-finals in Grand Slams at 38 years old. It’s unbelievable,” Roddick said.

He continued: “I was watching him right before we came over to this stage, and even in practice, there is never a shot that looks panicked. It’s always under control.”

Can Novak Djokovic really win Grand Slam number 25?

No matter how off his form or fitness might appear, it never pays to count out Djokovic.

This time around though there shouldn’t be any concerns about his health, considering he hasn’t played a match since Wimbledon.

The break means he’ll arrive in New York fully rested and ready to put his All-England Club loss to Jannik Sinner behind him.

Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are expected to be his main rivals for the title again this year. But Sinner recently pulled out of the Cincinnati Open final due to illness while Alcaraz faces a tough path through the draw.
