Well, the confirmation finally came.
After hours of speculation and anger, 12 clubs confirmed their intention to start the new Super League.
This hasn’t gone down well; it’s an anti-competition idea, one which closes off Europe’s elite from perceivably ‘smaller’ clubs.
Fans are absolutely furious with this idea, and Jamie Carragher made his opinion abundantly clear late last night.
When Liverpool announced their inclusion in the plans, Carragher sated that the Reds have become an ’embarrassment’.
Carragher feels that some of the clubs key figures in history – think Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley, Kenny Dalglish – would be embarrassed too.
For a club like Liverpool, who preach the ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ mantra and push saying like ‘This Means More’, to be setting up this new closed-off competition is a real slap in the face.
This has been branded ‘franchise football’ given that no promotion or relegation will be happening, so it’s just the same rich European teams operating with even more money and playing each other endlessly.
Jurgen Klopp has made it clear in the past that he isn’t keen, and Carragher has joined Liverpool fans in reacting angrily to the statement.
