Kevin Campbell has slammed a fellow pundit for comments relating to Arsenal youngster Ethan Nwaneri.
On Sunday, Arsenal made history by making Nwaneri the youngest player in Premier League history.
At the age of 15 and 181 days, the Hale End academy product came on as a substitute in the 3-0 victory away to Brentford in this competition.
It’s since proven a divisive decision by Gunners manager Mikel Arteta.
And on talkSPORT last night, Jason Cundy claimed that if the Arsenal boss really cared about Nwaneri then he wouldn’t have shone such a massive spotlight on him this early.
However, former North Londoners’ hitman Campbell has angrily responded to the pundit on Twitter and here’s what he said:
Firstly, it’s a stupid claim by Cundy to state that Arteta does not care about the player.
Clearly the Spanish manager has Nwaneri’s best interests at heart and if he feels that the kid is strong and stoic enough to handle the pressure of being the Premier League’s youngest-ever footballer then that decision has to be respected.
That being said, it could still prove to be the wrong decision in the long term.
Nwaneri has beaten Harvey Elliott’s record but the two youngest players in the Premier League before that – Matthew Briggs and Isiah Brown – have not gone on to massive things in English football.
There’s no guarantee that this is the start of a glittering Arsenal career for the talent, but Arteta clearly does care about the player and even if it’s the wrong decision, it isn’t evidence of Cundy being right.
