Leeds United are edging closer towards appointing Argentine manager Marcelo Bielsa.

A week ago it seemed unthinkable but with Sky Sports reporting the club is in advanced talks with Bielsa, it’s time for fans to get excited.

Bielsa has worked with some of the world’s best players, including Chile attacker Alexis Sanchez.

Sanchez rated Bielsa highly, and credits him with his career success.

Considering he has played under Pep Guardiola too, it’s an impressive claim.

Quoted with Goal in 2012, Sanchez said: “I learned a lot from him and it is because of him that I am who I am.

“What I remember the most about Bielsa was the mentality that he tries his players to have.”

Leeds played have faltered in recent years and it has not always been due to a lack of talent.

Their failings can be partly attributed to failing to deal with sky high expectations, and the pressure of playing in front of packed crowds at Elland Road.

If Bielsa can add a steely mentality to the Leeds squad, which he will replenish with new talent, then the club will be better for it.

As for Sanchez, he has struggled since joining Manchester United in January, with Jose Mourinho failing to get the best out of him.

Perhaps if he had Bielsa directing him, he would have settled far better.
