Lewis Dunk has lavished praise on Arsenal new boy Ben White, claiming he has the potential to be a real star.

Arsenal sealed a £50 million deal for the former Brighton & Hove Albion powerhouse at the end of July.

In doing so, the Gunners made him their most expensive defender of all time in a move that has questioned a lot of fans.

That’s because White, despite being hugely talented, only had one season of Premier League football with the Seagulls under his belt.

But the 23-year-old impressed alongside Dunk in Albion’s senior side last season.

And the Brighton defender claims that the England international – who was at Euro 2020 but didn’t play – has a glittering career ahead of him.

He told talkSPORT: “He’s got the potential to for sure. I think we seen it for a good few years now how good he is. I spoke to him a few times in the summer when he was away with England just seeing how he was and if he was enjoying it and he was only saying good things.

“What a summer he’s had I suppose, been in a Euro final and getting a £50m move, not bad is it for him.”

Friday

White has already impressed under Mikel Arteta in pre season, producing promising displays against Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

But the real test comes on Friday when Arsenal kick off their Premier League campaign away to Brentford.

These are the games where he will be expected to be his team’s most reliable defender and it’s a bit of an acid test.

Yes, the Bees only won promotion a few months ago, but that in itself makes them a dangerous proposition because they’ll be out to make a statement immediately.

And White and Arsenal will have to be on their game.
