Michael Edwards is leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, and he’ll depart Anfield with a number of fond memories.

Edwards has been the Reds’ Sporting Director for a number of years now and he’s assembled an incredible squad at Anfield.

Indeed, this group of players, the majority of which were signed by Edwards, have gone on to win the Champions League and the Premier League, but who have been Edwards’ very best signings? We’re going to take a look.

3^rd: Virgil van Dijk

Eyebrows were raised when Liverpool made Virgil van Dijk the most expensive defender on the planet back in 2018.

The Reds paid a then-record £75m fee for the centre-back, and at the time, it looked to be a questionable deal.

Now, van Dijk wasn’t a bad player, but to pay that much for a Southampton defender seemed ludicrous.

Little did we know, £75m would prove to be a bargain for the Dutchman.

Since his arrival, van Dijk has established himself as one of the best players in the world. He’s finished second in the Ballon d’Or voting and won the PFA Player of the Year award since his arrival.

This was an expensive signing, but it was certainly worthwhile.

2^nd: Andrew Robertson

‘What a signing’ is what Alan Shearer said about Andy Robertson as he named him as the fourth-best full-back to ever play in the Premier League, and he’s absolutely right.

£8m is all Robertson cost from the recently-relegated Hull City and he’s now worth at least ten times that amount.

The fact that Robertson was named on the BBC Match of the Day top 10 list of best Premier League full-backs tells you all you need to know about his ability and at the age of 27, he still has a number of years ahead of him.

This was a brilliant purchase from Edwards.

1^st: Mohamed Salah

Who else was it going to be?

£34m is a snip for a player who is now being described as the best footballer on the planet, and he absolutely deserves that label.

He’s won two Premier League Golden Boot awards and he’s on track to bag a third this season.

He holds the record for the most goals in a 38-game Premier League season and he scored one of the most important goals in the club’s history, netting the opener in the 2019 Champions League final from the penalty spot.

Salah has recently been described as ‘spectacular’ and that’s exactly what he is.

This may not just be Edwards’ best signing for Liverpool, this may be the best signing the Reds have ever made.
