Guillem Balague has suggested on his Youtube channel that he thinks that Rodrigo will be absolutely brilliant for Leeds United.

Leeds are closing in on a deal to sign Rodrigo, with Valencia announcing that he was close to a departure last night.

The 29-year-old forward is set to become Marcelo Bielsa’s side’s record signing.

And Balague thinks that Rodrigo could be the perfect fit for Leeds’ system.

“What a signing for Leeds! He’s a modern striker, if you like,” Balague said.

“The progression of football means that football has gone from trying to attack small spaces, like Barcelona used to do, to attacking big spaces.

“You need the likes of Rodrigo for that to be useful to you and for that to be efficient.

“He moves with intelligence around the attack, as a nine, but he can play in wide areas. His best role is in a team where that mobility and dynamism is crucial.

“You need the strikers to run a lot, as they do at Leeds, and go into the pressure to do a job without the ball – Rodrigo can do that.”

Bielsa tends to like to give new signings a long time before exposing them to his first-team, but Rodrigo is expected to start sooner rather than later.

Patrick Bamford helped Leeds to promotion last term, but some doubts remain about his finishing, and there is a feeling that Rodrigo will inevitably take his place.

The Spanish international has been one of the leading marksmen in La Liga over a number of seasons now, and his signing really highlights Leeds’ ambition in their first season back in the top flight.

Leeds begin their campaign with a match against last season’s champions Liverpool on September 12th.
