There aren’t many positives to take from Liverpool’s 4-1 defeat to Napoli on Wednesday evening.

The Reds were awful in Italy, the defence was disorganised, the attack was blunt and the midfield was almost non-existent.

This Liverpool squad have a number of issues to sort out and most of the players on the pitch on Wednesday need to take a long, hard look in the mirror.

However, one player who can hold his head up high after Liverpool’s Champions League embarrassment is Luis Diaz.

The Colombian, in typical fashion, gave his all in Naples, and Liverpool supporting pundit, Jose Enrique, took to Twitter after the game to laud the winger.

Enrique says he wishes Liverpool had 11 Luis Diaz’s, and while that wouldn’t work from a tactical point of view, a number of Liverpool’s players could do with taking a leaf out of his book in terms of work-rate and application.

Indeed, while Diaz was running his socks off and chasing down every loose ball, the rest of the team looked decidedly lackadaisical in their approach, and that needs to change very quickly.

Diaz may not be the Liverpool captain, nor is he likely to be the loudest voice in the dressing room, but in terms of leading by example, no other player is doing what Diaz is doing right now.

It’s not easy to understand why Liverpool’s levels have dropped, perhaps it’s burnout, perhaps the team are still recovering from the disappointment of last season’s Champions League final, but whatever it is, Jurgen Klopp needs to address it and find a solution very quickly.
