Patrick van Aanholt lauded rumoured Rangers target, Gary Cahill, as a ‘top player’ on Instagram after he announced on Sunday that he has left Crystal Palace.
The 35-year-old’s contract at Selhurst Park expired at the end of June and there are some suggestions that Rangers are keen on his talents.
Palace have seen a number of their senior players leave this summer, upon the expiry of their contracts, including Andros Townsend and Patrick van Aanholt.
But could the hard-hitting defender be heading towards Ibrox? Because this is Steven Gerrard’s ample chance to snap him up.
When Cahill posted his farewell message to Palace fans yesterday, several of his former teammates responded.
Striker Christian Benteke wrote in the comments section: “Top player and top man.”
Whilst Jordan Ayew added: “What a player. We will miss you. Good luck on your next chapter.”
Van Aanholt, who was another Palace player that left the club on a free this summer, also wrote: “Top player. Honour to play alongside you. All the best.”

Well, whilst Rangers aren’t desperate to bring in another centre-back, a player of Cahill’s qualities and experience would no doubt help them on and off the pitch.
The former England international has had a trophy-laden career, which includes winning the Champions League in Chelsea colours in 2012.
And after his successes on English soil, he may now want to get a taste of Scottish football and one of the most passionate derbies in world football – the Old Firm.
Plus, there’s also the chance to help Gerrard win back-to-back Premiership titles, and going by the opening weekend results, Celtic are already facing an uphill task.
