John Terry has lauded former Aston Villa teammate James Chester on Twitter.

Aston Villa paid tribute to their past central defender by wishing him a Happy Birthday on social media.

Chester, who now plays for Stoke City in the Championship, turned 33 years of age today.

And here’s how Terry responded to the Villans’ tweet about the Wales international.

Released

Chester was released by Aston Villa during the summer of 2020 and ultimately joined the Potters on a permanent basis.

The veteran centre-back helped the Midlands club to Premier League promotion, playing 28 Championship outings that season.

However, the towering figure picked up an injury in January and missed the final few months of the campaign under Dean Smith.

Chester never made a Premier League appearance for Villa, making the bench on five occasions before joining the Championship outfit on loan this time two years ago.

With Tyrone Mings, Kortney Hause and Ezri Konsa on their books at the time, the competition for centre-back places was too fierce and a winter departure made perfect sense for Chester, who has 35 caps for Wales.

The Warrington-born powerhouse was even playing Premier League 2 football with the Under-23 side in his final season at Villa Park, underlining the importance of needing to leave.
