John Terry has claimed on Instagram that reported Liverpool target Antonio Rudiger is a ‘great defender’ for Chelsea.

The Chelsea legend added that his former side are ‘lucky to have him in our team’.

“I love you brother,” said Terry on Rudiger. “What a player. The passion he shows for our club is what I love to see.

“Great defender and an absolute animal. Lucky to have you at our club.”

It remains to be seen how long the current European Cup holders will have Rudiger in their ranks because he is out of contract in the summer.

So much so, that even Liverpool have emerged as surprise contenders to sign up the German on a free transfer in the summer, as reported by Eurosport.

Some may question why the Reds will push for the 28-year-old given that they are now stacked with centre-backs.

That is true, but come the summer window, Nat Phillips could leave to look for game time elsewhere.

Whilst Joe Gomez, who used to regularly partner Virgil van Dijk at the back before his injury, is now behind Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate in the pecking order.

And, as a result, Aston Villa are one of the early favourites to bring him to the West Midlands in the summer, as reported by the Athletic.

If Jurgen Klopp loses both of those players, then he will need more depth in his backline.

And if Rudiger can’t agree on a new contract at Stamford Bridge, then Liverpool won’t be the only ones waiting in the transfer queue to sign him up.
