Ronny Deila left Celtic in 2016 with a mixed reputation with the Scottish giants, however, the Norwegian coach last night made history as New York City FC won MLS Cup.
The 46-year-old manager has been at the helm of Manchester City’s American sister club since 2020. And last night, NYCFC did the unthinkable and won MLS Cup against the Portland Timbers.
After conceding in the last second of the match, the game was dragged to penalties, where NYCFC came out victorious after two huge saves in the shootout from club captain Sean Johnson.
Indeed, it is the first MLS Cup the City Football Group side have won. And for Deila, it was a historic moment for the former Celtic manager, with the coach achieving what the likes of Patrick Vieira was unable to do.
In typical Deila fashion, the celebrations were wild, with the City manager stripping down to his underwear and celebrating in front of the 1,000+ City fans who made the cross-country trip for the final.
Whilst Deila’s time with Celtic was mixed, many fans on social media were happy for their former coach after making history in the MLS Cup with New York City.
The Pidgeons headed into the match as the underdogs, with the Portland Timbers famed for their home support and atmosphere at Providence Park. Yet despite this, Deila’s side dominated the majority of the match.
Celtic fans laud Deila after historic MLS Cup win

Deila only ever won three trophies during his time with Celtic. Yet it is likely that the coach will remember winning MLS Cup with City as one of his best career achievements. And Celtic fans were delighted for their former manager last night.
Here’s what some Celtic supporters had to say on Twitter about Deila winning MLS Cup for NYCFC…
