Newcastle United fans fear that Rafael Benitez’s plan to ask for £20 million to spend in the January transfer window will backfire.

According to a report in the Daily Mirror, Newcastle boss Benitez is keen to bring in a striker, an attacking midfielder and a left-back when the transfer window re-opens.

The Spanish boss wants £20 million to spend to bring in his desired targets, but Newcastle fans fear that he has no chance of getting the required quality on such a budget.

Whether Benitez will even have £20 million to spend is likely to depend on if Newcastle’s takeover goes through.

Amanda Staveley is attempting to buy the North East club from Mike Ashley, and if the businesswoman does take charge, she is likely to hand Benitez a sizeable amount of funds.

Ashley, though, could opt not to re-invest in Newcastle in January, if he is at the helm, due to his desire to sell the club.

Newcastle have already been linked with a whole host of players ahead of the window re-opening, with Benitez confirming that players who can immediately step into his side’s first-team are being targeted.
