Speaking on the Yours, Mine, Away Podcast, Everton’s Andy Lonergan has been discussing his time at Liverpool and Adrian San Miguel.
Lonergan joined Liverpool as the third-choice goalkeeper for a season back in 2019/20, and while he didn’t see much action for the Reds, he was very much involved behind the scenes.
As a player who spent most of his career in the EFL, one may imagine that Lonergan wouldn’t have fit into the Liverpool dressing room, but the former Leeds United man says that the players at Anfield were all good people and very humble.
Lonergan seemingly took to one player in particular, Adrian, stating that he loved the energy he used to bring to training, comparing him to a seven-year-old.

Lonergan hails Adrian
The goalkeeper spoke highly of the Spaniard and the energy he would bring to training.
“They’re great guys the goalkeepers to work with. I’ve said this before but the higher you go the more humble and good people they are,” Lonergan.
“Adrian who came in when I was there. What a guy man. He has so much energy, he’s like a seven-year-old. He just doesn’t stop.”
What you need
Adrian may not be the most talented goalkeeper in the Premier League, but as Liverpool’s current third-choice, the most important part of his role is to be a good character in the dressing room.
Third-choice goalies such as Scott Carson, Adrian and even Lonergan himself know they’re unlikely to ever get a game, but their role as a voice behind the scenes and a standard-bearer in training is more important than people give credit for.
Adrian may not play many minutes for Liverpool, but it seems as though he is a vital part of the social group behind the scenes.
