‘What a find’: Barry Ferguson says ‘Steven Gerrard got it spot on’ when signing one Rangers ace

Speaking on the Open Goal YouTube Channel, Barry Ferguson has praised Rangers for the signing of Leon Balogun this summer.

The Ibrox legend was talking about the Old Firm Derby and Rangers’ defensive performance in that game, pointing out that Balogun was one of the Glasgow outfit’s top performers.

Ferguson also gave credit to Celtic’s frontline Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths, claiming that they made sure Balogun and Conor Goldson knew they weren’t going to have an easy time of it.

“Balogun and Goldson knew they were in a game straight away, “ Ferguson said.

The panel then went on to discuss a tackle Balogun made during the game, and Ferguson chimed in with his view on the incident.

“Unbelievable, that’s why he’s played, did you see his recovery? So pacy, what a find he’s been.”

“I know how hard it is to get players in right, and you need to try and to get them in on the first day of pre-season, you need to get them in to get them to know the environment they’re in get them to know their teammates, get them to know the standards and the expectations of the club, and that’s where Steven Gerrard got it spot on.”

Fergson is bound to know a thing or two about recruitment having been a manager himself.

He’s absolutely spot on, Gerrard and Ross Wilson did brilliantly to get players through the door early this summer, and that work has paid off, with Balogun earning plaudits from fans in what was arguably the most important game of the Gers’ season.

Balogun is a prime example of this. Ok, he may not have arrived on the first day of pre-season, but he joined the club with plenty of time before the season started, and he was ready to play a full 90 minutes on the opening day against Aberdeen, and since then he hasn’t looked back.

Rangers’ recruitment was always going to be key if they were going to stay Celtic’s run of consecutive league titles, and with 19 points separating them from their rivals, it’s fair to say they’re on track to do just that.
