Speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, Callum Wilson has been discussing his impressions of Newcastle and West Ham United when he was a youngster.
Wilson was, of course, asked about Newcastle due to the fact it’s his current club, while his co-host plays for West Ham, so that was the other topic of conversation.
Wilson says that he always thought that West Ham would be a great club to play for due to the fact he’d watched the film Green Street and liked the passion that was shown by the fanbase in the movie.

Wilson liked West Ham
Wilson spoke about his view of West Ham and Newcastle when he was younger.
“For me, when you talk about Newcastle and West Ham. I watched Green Street back in the day so I knew it would be a good atmosphere. The first time at Upton Park I was buzzing to be there because I knew the history from the film,” Wilson said.
“Newcastle was the same because of the film Goal, those were films I watched and they were about the two football clubs we’re talking about and it was only positive things in thinking what a club to play for, for both of them to be honest. The West Ham fans were so passionate in the film and in Goal it shows you the stadium and things like that.”
Missed the point
We can’t help but feel that Wilson may have slightly missed the point when he watched the film Green Street.
Without going into too much detail, that isn’t a nice film at all and it certainly doesn’t paint West Ham fans in a good light, showing the darker side of football fandom and hooliganism.
However, something within that film seemingly resonated with Wilson and he’s always thought that West Ham would be a good team to play for because of the fans – and to be fair, he’s right, the West Ham fans can be brilliant, but we can’t agree with the idea that Green Street portrayed that in any way.
As for the film Goal, that is a much better advert for Newcastle United than Green Street ever was for West Ham and we can understand why any budding player would have been inspired by Santiago Munez’s story in that film.
