Celtic have struggled for creativity in a season that’s seen them lose their grip on the title

To call this a frustrating season for James Forrest would be an understatement.

The 29-year-old was involved in every one of Celtic’s nine consecutive title victories, and would have been expecting to play a key role in their journey to 10-in-a-row.

Injury has restricted him to just 10 appearances in all competitions, however, and he’s been forced to watch from the sidelines as Neil Lennon’s men fell 23 points behind Rangers in the title race.

Forrest , who reportedly earns £15,000 per week, sustained an injury to his ankle September and has undergone surgery.

The winger looks set to hand Lennon a much-needed boost, with the manager confirming Forrest’s imminent return to training.

As quoted by the Scottish Sun, Lennon said: “We’re hoping Jamesy will start back training with the squad at the start of next week. Fingers crossed on that.

“He’s been out on the grass doing his rehab fitness work and the physios are confident he’ll be ready to join back in next week.

“We’ve missed him because he’s a quality player. He’s proved that over the years, time and again, and been so successful.

“He had another magnificent session last year and started this season well again. But unfortunately for him he got a really bad injury and he’s had to be patient and go through all the right steps.

“But he’s nearly there now and he’ll be welcomed back.”

Forrest, who has been capped 35 times for the Scottish national team, has scored 90 goals in 404 appearances for the champions.

While he moves closer to a return, Celtic’s next fixture will come too soon for him.

They are in action on Saturday when Motherwell are the visitors to Celtic Park.
