Ange Postecoglou reportedly wants the Rangers job – and has quit his post as Australia boss.
Australia may have qualified for the World Cup – but that hasn’t been enough for Ange Postecoglou to stay in the job for next summer’s tournament.
The Socceroos came through a play-off against Honduras to reach the finals in Russia next summer, but having had to go through the play-offs in the first place, questions have surrounded the future of manager Postecoglou.
Postecoglou, 52, took the Australia job in 2013 after a spell Melbourne Victory, and he not only guided his side to two World Cups, but also won the 2015 Asia Cup.
Towards the end of his reign though, there were murmurings of discontent, and Postecoglou’s four-year spell is now over, and he leaves with a 45% win rate.
Postecoglou may now look for a return to domestic football, and he was recently linked with one particular post – the vacancy with Glasgow Rangers.
Rangers sacked manager Pedro Caixinha last month, and ESPN reported earlier this month that Postecoglou wants to land the Ibrox job, in what would be something of a gamble for the Gers.
Rangers fans may not know too much about Postecoglou, but Australia fans have been taking to Twitter to react to his departure, with very few of them having bad words to say about him.
Some fans feel that Australia have ‘lost a real gem’ in Postecoglou, hailing a great legacy in the post whilst praising his brand of football, which may well give Rangers fans some belief that he could be a good appointment after all.
