Paul Gilmour has said to Sky Sports News that Tottenham Hotspur’s move for Paulo Fonseca broke down through their own decision to look elsewhere.

Fonseca looked nailed on to become Tottenham’s next manager, but yesterday evening the talks collapsed in a shocking twist.

At first it was thought that financial difficulties may have led to Spurs changing their mind.

However, Sky claim that Tottenham’s decision had nothing to do with money.

Instead, Spurs decided to go down a different direction for footballing reasons.

“We have had information verified that indeed those talks with Fonseca have broken down,” he said.

“We’re told that it’s a decision that Tottenham themselves have taken and we’re also told it’s not to do with anything financial in those negotiations.

“As of last week those discussions were quite advanced, we reported last week that talks with Fonseca were going well and everyone though Tottenham had finally found Jose Mourinho’s replacement. But those talks have broken down.”

A bad reaction

It initially seemed that Genarro Gatusso was the man set to land the Spurs job.

However, fans quickly got the words ‘No To Gattuso’ trending on Twitter, as they expressed their fury.

The appointment of Fonseca was also not popular, but there was a feeling that there was some sense behind it.

Gattuso, on the other hand, looked to be an ill fitting candidate for the Spurs job, and claims in the Athletic suggest that Tottenham have now backed away from him, leaving their search back to square one.
