Odds have been slashed on Everton making a move for West Ham United defender Winston Reid in the summer – possibly with Phil Jagielka’s future in mind.

Phil Jagielka’s Everton career looked to be winding down as recently as the turn of the year. The veteran centre-half’s omission from the starting XI following a series of error-strewn displays meant he was tipped to depart in January and bring an end to ten largely excellent years at Goodison Park.

Since then, however, the long-serving England international has offered a timely reminder of his qualities, thanks in part to Ramiro Funes-Mori’s injury problems. He scored three goals in three games in April while few defenders in the Premier League have been quite as impressive as Jagielka in the last few weeks.

Though, at the age of 34, Everton should at least be sounding out potential long-term replacements. He and centre-back partner Ashley Williams have a combined age of 66 and, although Mason Holgate clearly has the talent to assume the position eventually, it’s no surprise that Ronald Koeman is in the market for defensive reinforcements this summer.

And despite recent links with Harry Maguire and Michael Keane, West Ham United’s Winston Reid has emerged as a surprise target. BetVictor have slashed the odds on Everton making a summer move to 2/1.

The Hammers will no doubt dig their heels in if The Toffees attempt to lure the 28-year-old to Goodison Park but there’s a feeling among some supporters that the club have been fortunate to hang onto Reid as long as they have.

The New Zealand international has almost improved by the season since joining from Midtjylland in 2010 and he’s been a pillar of consistency throughout a turbulent campaign.

And few defenders appear quite so capable of replacing a player of Jagielka’s influence. An old-fashioned, physical centre-back who thrives with his back against the wall. Reid is also a leader and a galvanising influence on the pitch.

Just like Everton’s veteran centre-back.
