West Ham United striker Toni Martinez continues to score goals.
West Ham United coach Terry Westley has told the club’s official website that he felt striker Toni Martinez’s second goal against Bristol Rovers was ‘sublime’.
The Hammers first team endured a disappointing afternoon at Crystal Palace last weekend, drawing 2-2 after leading 2-0 at half time at Selhurst Park.
On Tuesday night, West Ham’s Under-21’s were in Checkatrade Trophy action against League One side Bristol Rovers, and fell 1-0 down to Tom Nichols’ opening goal.
However, West Ham hit back with a 3-1 win, as Spanish forward Toni Martinez scored a brace, with Martin Samuelsen’s goal sandwiched between them.
Defender Declan Rice appears to be the most likely player to step up from the Under-21 side to face Liverpool this weekend given West Ham’s defensive crisis, but Spanish striker Martinez again staked his claim.
Martinez was hailed by coach Terry Westley after the final whistle, as he told the club’s official website that he felt Martinez’s second goal was ‘sublime’, praising him for a magnificent finish.
“His second goal was sublime,” said Westley. “The way he got in between people and he saw the keeper and instantly knew he had to take it in one touch, it was a magnificent finish.” he added.
Martinez still looks unlikely to play against Liverpool, but the calls from West Ham fans for him to feature in the first time will surely grow louder and louder the more he impresses in the Under-21’s under Westley.
The former Valencia man has scored regularly for West Ham’s development squad since his arrival in 2016, and there is only so long that Slaven Bilic can keep the 20-year-old out of the first team reckoning as he continues to impress.
