West Ham’s Sam Byram records club’s best interception numbers for a full-back this season

No West Ham full back has done what Sam Byram did this weekend against Sunderland.

West Ham United new boy Sam Byram is already making an impact at the club, and is impressing in the place of Carl Jenkinson.

Byram was bought from Leeds United in January as the full-back of the future, and loanee Jenkinson later suffered a career ending injury.

This has meant an increased role for the 22-year-old, but it is one in which Byram is already flourishing.

Byram made six interceptions at the weekend in the 1-0 home win over Sunderland, the highest number made by any West Ham full-back this season.

That edged out the previous best of five which he had shared with left-back Aaron Cresswell.

When it comes to making interceptions, Byram is twice as effective as Carl Jenkinson. The highest number the Arsenal loanee made this season for the Hammers in a Premier League game was three.

Byram’s early performances for West Ham are hugely encouraging and there appears to be no future at the club for Carl Jenkinson.

Had Byram struggled after signing from Leeds, and Jenkinson not got injured, the Hammers could have explored their options further for next season, but it appears already that they have bought well once again, and discovered a player who can do just what Aaron Cresswell has a left-back since his big move from Ipswich Town two summers ago.
