West Ham United may not be having the best of seasons but choosing their player of the year is still going to be difficult.
West Ham fans have a tough decision to make despite a poor season
For most West Ham United fans, what has been a disappointing season can’t end quick enough.
The Hammers have endured a torrid second season under Slaven Bilic after their record breaking farewell campaign at Upton Park.
Knocked out of the Europa League, EFL Cup and FA Cup in embarrassing fashion, the East Londoners then lost star player Dimitri Payet after he forced through a return to Marseille.
Bilic turned things around after Christmas as the club pulled away from the relegation zone but results have dipped again of late with no win in five and three defeats on the bounce.
Despite the poor second season under Bilic, West Ham fans will find it difficult to choose a Hammer of the Year as three of their players have been consistently good and reliable while another has shone since Christmas.
In many ways the Hammer of the Year – a prestigious honour won by the likes of Bobby Moore, Sir Trevor Brooking, Julian Dicks, Paolo Di Canio and many more – could be decided now given that the three players surely in the running are all out injured for much of what remains of the season.
West Ham United’s Pedro Obiang
Defender Winston Reid and midfielders Michail Antonio and Pedro Obiang – comfortably West Ham’s best three performers this season – were all injured against Leicester City last time out.
Obiang is out until next season while Reid is out for around six weeks and Antonio closer to five.
Manuel Lanzini celebrates
It gives fans a dilemma over who to select as their best player this season but could the trio be pipped by Manuel Lanzini who, after an injury hit first half of the season, has been in superb form since stepping out of Payet’s shadow.
If the little Argentine can maintain his high standards until the end of the season then he could well steal the crown from one of those three with Obiang currently the favourite.
