West Ham’s Marko Arnautovic admits being surprised people don’t like him

Marko Arnautovic has enjoyed a very mixed season with West Ham United.

Marko Arnautovic has told West Ham’s official website that he remains determined to prove a point to those who doubt him, and admitted that he is surprised when he hears people say that they do not like him.

Arnautovic’s season has been one of dramatically contrasting fortunes. The Austrian did not score a single goal during the final months of Slaven Bilic’s tenure, but has looked a completely different player since David Moyes took charge.

He has scored seven goals in his last 11 games in all competitions, while he also provided three assists in the Premier League. And after scoring in the 2-0 win over Watford on Saturday, Arnautovic suggested that the determination to keep proving his critics wrong continues to inspire him.

“I don’t want to keep talking about myself. It was a tough beginning at the Club but I want just to show the critical people, all the people who don’t think I’m good, that I’m good and I want to give everything for this Club, that’s why I play football,” he told the club’s official website.

“I’m surprised some people don’t like me! I think I have a good heart, so they should like me!”

The win over the Hornets was arguably a hugely important one for the Irons as they looked as if they may be about to slip back towards the bottom three in the Premier League.

Moyes’ men are now five points clear of the relegation zone and have a decent amount of momentum as the win moves them level on points with Saturday’s opponents and leaves them as close to the top eight as the bottom three.

And with only three of the current bottom-half still to play in their final 11 games, that cushion may prove hugely important for West Ham’s survival hopes. But if Arnautovic maintains the form that he has shown over the last few months, the Hammers should have little trouble keeping themselves out of trouble.
