Marcus Browne’s performance for West Ham United’s Under-23s on Monday has caught the attention of former Hammer Rio Ferdinand.

The 20-year-old attacking midfielder scored all of West Ham’s goals in a 4-0 win against Everton at Southport’s Haig Avenue ground.

And – responding to a tweet from another ex-Irons defender, Danny Gabbidon – Ferdinand backed Browne for a first team breakthrough before long.

Browne – who like Ferdinand is a product of West Ham’s academy system – made the bench for the senior side’s games against Swansea City and Burnley last month, but is still awaiting his debut for the club.

The Londoner spent time on loan at Wigan Athletic last season, but only made one cameo appearance.

Browne’s former Under-23 team colleague Declan Rice is the latest homegrown talent to break into West Ham’s first team, playing 25 times this season.

Should West Ham hand Browne a chance before the campaign is out?
