West Ham’s Jose Fonte would be a superb signing for West Brom

The West Ham United defender would be a useful addition to the West Bromwich Albion squad.

Baggies boss Tony Pulis is still looking to strengthen his squad before the transfer window slams shut at the end of this month, after he told reporters of his desire to bring in another centre-back the summer, as quoted by the Express & Star.

Pulis has a strong and experienced group of men at his disposal at the Hawthorns, and his penchant for signing players who have been around the block for a while could see him target a defender in the 30 plus age bracket.

With this in mind, West Brom should consider a move for Hammers defender Jose Fonte, who only moved to east London seven months ago.

The 33-year-old has failed to establish himself at West Ham, since his acrimonious move from Southampton, and he now looks to be behind both Winston Reid and Angelo Ogbonna in the central defensive pecking order at the London Stadium.

He does still have a lot to offer at the highest level, however, and his aerial strength along with good communication and organisational skills make him the ideal fit for a Tony Pulis managed side.

Fonte is by no means the fastest of runners, but the Baggies are a side who usually play with a deep back-line, so that should not be an issue. He is an expert reader of the game, however, which more than makes up for his lack of pace.

The Portugal international joined West Ham for around £8 million, so the Hammers’ owners will surely be looking to recoup at least that amount, should they decide to sell him this summer.

And if Pulis manages to bring Fonte to the Hawthorns for anywhere near that amount, it would surely constitute a bargain in today’s day and age.
